Runner’s Den Resolution 5k Fun Run

Some friends and I thought it would be fun to do a bit of a community/camaraderie run to ring in the New Year, so we signed up for the local shop’s (Runner’s Den) 5k Fun Run/Walk – which was exactly that. No timing (other than my watch), no placing, no medals, no competition. Really it was just a great run to support a local shop, meet some new people, and take it easy on a run. I stopped a couple of times along the way to take a few (very grainy) photos with the iPhone, and ran much of the race with my wife, turning around at the end to encourage a big finish for our friends that were out with us.

Put together more like a group run than a race, and for that reason it may be one that I only do that one time. Not to say that it wasn’t enjoyable – it was – but if I’m going to pay to run, I want it to be for some competition. I can run with a group anytime.

The Jackets

The Path

Lit Up

The course was a simple out-and-back that was much on the same course as the Hanukkah Hustle – going along the waterfront trail for half of the run. There was one “major” hill – so a traverse down on the way out and back up on the return was required. It wasn’t huge – but big enough that it gave some people a challenge. The group spread out a bit over the course of the run – there were some walkers who joined – so the pace was conversational, and lots of people were chatting along the way, encouraging others or catching up with friends. There was no pressure, and it felt good to be out for an easy evening run in the unseasonably warm air.

Unfortunately the run was not well-advertised, and even the website was unclear on the time of the race (5pm in one spot, 6pm in another), which led to some confusion. One man arrived as we were about to leave, thinking the run began an hour later. The plus was, of course, that a jacket was included in the fee. My wife got a very nice red Resolution Run Brooks jacket with “Runner’s Den” on the back. Since there weren’t any Resolution jackets left in my size I ended up with a black Road2Hope Brooks jacket, which was fine with me since I’d run the race.

The Food

Me + Sarah

The food was homemade, and there was lots of it, along with coffee and hot apple cider. The folks were nice and we had the opportunity to meet the store’s owner and his wife. While the website could use help, and from a business end the whole thing seemed a bit of a mess, the actual event was very nice and brought together a small group (about 100) of people who’re connected through the Runner’s Den and cohabitation in Hamilton. I love those community runs – homegrown, small, friendly. Obviously not a result for the books, but fun none-the-less.

Recommended for those looking to get a jacket, meet some new people, and push towards a goal that will end the year/start the New Year right without going with the oft-crowded Running Room Resolution Runs. Call it an indie group run with perks.

  1. I’ll update the race reviews with the fees as well as the swag given out at each. Thanks for the suggestion, Chris.
