Pancake Tuesday is rooted in the religious practice of confession – people seek to be purified for the upcoming season of Lent (Shrove Tuesday is the last day before Ash Wednesday). In recognition of the day, I ate pancakes, and decided to confess something: I think I’m a carbo-holic.
It’s not that I mean to be, but my days are filled with cereal, bread, pasta, and usually more cereal. I’m feeling like I need some more balance in my meals, which means putting more thought into what I eat.
My wife is always reminding me to “look around” and see everything there is to eat, but my apparent laziness often reaches for a bowl and cereal or a bun. It doesn’t help that I work from home, which means that the kitchen is always only a few steps away. And when I’m hungry and need to munch I often grab what comes quickly – those muffins my wife made, some cereal, chips, crackers, a bagel.
While I’m not really worried about my fat intake – I’m sure I get plenty – I want to up the ante on my “good” carbs – fruits and vegetables – and seriously pump up my protein intake. Some days my only protein is a handful of nuts.
To that end I started taking some protein powder in my shakes – but it was pretty gross. Perhaps I’ll have to find another kind that tastes better – or put less in my shake. Whatever the solution is, I need to figure it out soon.
I think my weight would be right where I want it if I could get my eating under control. Don’t get me wrong – I’m not seriously overweight, nor see myself as fat – and I’m not a ravaging glutton either, but if I could just grab hold of some simple daily habits I think things would go much better in the weight department. After all – leaner is meaner… I mean – faster.
A few thoughts I’m having:
- Since it’s lent – I’m going to give something up. I think it’ll be traditional “snack” foods – chips, greasy popcorn, chocolate, ice cream. It’s only 40 days – I can do that, right?
- Drink more water. It’s a huge part of curbing hunger pangs – and I need to e better hydrated anyways.
- Eat more fruit. Reaching into the fridge and looking around doesn’t come naturally, but it should. Getting into those bottom drawers could help me stay away from other temptations.
- Find a good protein supplement. I don’t like to eat large quantities of meat (although I snack on lunch meat sometimes… just on its own – is that weird?), so finding something that will boost my protein intake will be a high priority. I do have a handful of nuts each day, but I’ve got to expand those horizons.
Hopefully I’ll be able to report back on my progress in the future and let you know how it goes. I’m hopeful of a few more PR’s this year, and grabbing hold of my nutrition is going to help a bunch.
I guess I won’t be eating those leftover pancakes from tonight’s dinner…
