People are always saying to put on some bright clothing before you head out for a run at night. I think you need a bit more than that…

As a runner, and as a driver, I get pretty annoyed at people who are out at night without the proper gear, or common sense. Here’s what I think is important for night running:

Reflective gear

It’s important to have gear that has 3M Scotchlite or some other fancy space-age reflection so that cars can see you.

Headlamp

Not only is it safer for you to see where you’re going, but also for others to see you.

Phone

If trouble arises, the ability to get in contact with someone is pretty important.

Protection

Particularly for women running at night, it’s important to carry a whistle, some Mace, or a set of keys between your fingers.

Common Sense

Run in populated areas, where there’s plenty of traffic (foot or otherwise), lights and always, ALWAYS, run facing traffic if you’re on the road. You’ll be able to see the cars coming, and take precautions if someone is driving erratically.

If you’re not convinced that you need to wear more than just some light-coloured clothing when you’re out for a night run, check out this video:

Stay safe!
